Page Guide
We understand that fertility treatment can be a complex and emotional journey. Our team is dedicated to providing you with all the information and support you need throughout the process.
How it works

How it works
Semen (sperm) analysis is used to make an assessment of your fertility. Along with other clinical information, the results help to determine the likelihood of natural conception or, if necessary, what type of assisted conception treatment is appropriate for you.
The main measurements made in semen analysis tests include the concentration of sperm and how many are motile (moving as they should), progressive, and normal in shape. If one or more of these measurements is below the normal range, fertility may be impaired.
Semen analysis is a good indicator of your fertility, but it does have its limitations, as it does not test how the sperm will interact with eggs.
Semen samples are produced by masturbation in specially designated private rooms at one of our clinics. Ideally, the sample should be produced after sexual abstinence of at least two days, but no more than seven.
At home testing option
We also offer you the choice of conducting your semen analysis test at home with a test kit. Should you decide on this option, an analysis kit will be sent to you with full instructions on how to conduct the test and return it to the labs for analysis.*
*We use Mojo and The Doctors Laboratory to fulfil our at-home tests. When purchasing an at-home kit you authorise us to share your personal contact details.
Understanding your results
Your test results will be reviewed and discussed in your consultation with one of our fertility specialist doctors.
The outcome of your male fertility tests will give you an understanding of your sperm health and what this means for your fertility. It might be reassurance and peace of mind about your ability to conceive or may lead us to advise you about lifestyle changes that could increase your sperm health.
Following your consultation with one of our fertility specialist doctors to discuss your results, we may also recommend further tests, such as a Sperm DNA fragmentation test. If we identify that treatment or surgical intervention is needed, we will guide you through your options, with advice and support every step of the way.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions answered. Find clarity on every step of your fertility journey.
There are many natural ways to increase male fertility. Here are just a few:
- Reduce alcohol intake and stop smoking
Both alcohol and smoking can have a negative impact on fertility and reproductive health. Stopping smoking and drinking less can help to improve your chances of having a baby. - Keep to a healthy weight
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated using height and weight, and can be an indicator of health. Ideally, your BMI should be below 25. Excess body fat can reduce your chances of conceiving, as it can contribute to low sperm count in men. - Eat well
Eating a healthy, balanced diet has many advantages. It helps maintain an ideal body weight, aids the regulation of hormones and improves your fertility health and wellbeing.
Foods such as green leafy vegetables (folic acid, calcium and iron), eggs and dairy (calcium), nuts and seeds (vitamin E, zinc and selenium) and citrus fruits (vitamin C) contain key nutrients needed for healthy fertility.

If you and your partner are having regular unprotected sex (around twice a week) and have not conceived in two years, you are considered to have a fertility problem. At this point, your GP can refer you to an NHS specialist for testing.
Alternatively, if you are a self-funding patient and would like to avoid any waiting time, you can book in for a fertility health and wellbeing test privately with Bourn Hall at any time. The outcome of our male and female fertility tests might be reassurance and peace of mind about your ability to conceive naturally, or may lead us to advise you about lifestyle changes that will increase your chances of achieving a pregnancy. If we identify that treatment or surgical intervention is indicated, we will guide you through your options, with advice and support every step of the way.
If no sperm are being produced by the testes, a blood test at one of our clinics in Cambridge, Norwich, Wickford (or at one of our satellite clinics), could show whether that’s a result of a genetic condition or hormonal imbalance.
The most widely known genetic test is karyotype analysis. This looks at the size, number and shape of the chromosomes to rule out conditions such as Klinefelter syndrome, which is caused by an extra X chromosome. We would also recommend a Y chromosome microdeletion blood test. If a problem is detected with this chromosome, there is a chance it will be transferred to any male baby you may have, and this needs to be discussed. Both tests can be done at the same time.
A semen analysis (SA) includes a series of measurements made on the ejaculate, the results are used to make an assessment of male factor infertility or fertility. This test is necessary for all men wishing to use their own sperm during their treatment as the results of the SA will help decide the most appropriate treatment for you and your partner.
Our clinics across the East of England, including Cambridge, Colchester, Norwich and Wickford, are also here to help with our male-fertility treatments, such as ICSI, IMSI, and Surgical Sperm Retrieval (SSR). We are the only clinic in the East of England offering the new micro-TESE procedure, which can overcome a zero sperm count.
