Ovulation Induction (OI)
If your menstrual cycle is irregular or you’re not ovulating consistently, trying to conceive naturally can feel challenging. Ovulation induction therapy (OI) is a simple, effective fertility treatment designed to work with your body’s natural rhythm, helping you release eggs at the right time to increase your chances of pregnancy.
At Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic, our compassionate team will guide you through each step – from understanding your cycle to creating a treatment plan tailored just for you – so you can feel confident and supported on your path to parenthood.
Page Guide
We understand that fertility treatment can be a complex and emotional journey. Our team is dedicated to providing you with all the information and support you need throughout the process.
How it works
Ovulation induction therapy: how does it work?
For a natural pregnancy to happen, an egg needs to meet sperm in the fallopian tube – the narrow passage connecting the ovary to the uterus. Once fertilisation occurs, the embryo travels to the uterus, where it can implant and grow.
Every month, your body prepares for the possibility of pregnancy. Inside your ovary, a tiny fluid-filled sac called a follicle nurtures an egg as it develops. As the follicle grows, it releases special hormones that prepare your uterus to receive an embryo. When ovulation happens – the moment the egg is released – these hormones shift, creating a welcoming environment for an embryo to settle and thrive.
If ovulation doesn’t happen regularly, your chances of conceiving naturally can be much lower.
OI therapy is a simple fertility treatment designed to help. Using carefully chosen medication – either tablets or injections – we gently encourage your body to develop and release mature eggs. After getting to know you and your unique needs, our specialists will recommend the most suitable approach.
This treatment can be very effective. Around 7 in 10 women will ovulate, and roughly 4 in 10 will conceive within the first three months of ovulation induction treatment.
Throughout your cycle, we’ll be by your side – using ultrasound scans and blood tests to monitor your progress, celebrate milestones and give you the best chance of success.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions answered. Find clarity on every step of your fertility journey.
Many simple lifestyle choices may help support your fertility. Tracking your most fertile days, maintaining a healthy weight, stopping smoking, limiting alcohol and eating a balanced diet can all support your reproductive health and increase your chances of conceiving.
The right tests and treatments for female infertility will depend on the underlying cause. For some women, medication can help encourage regular ovulation (ovulation induction). Others may be advised to explore treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
Whatever your situation, your fertility specialist will work closely with you to recommend the approach that’s right for you.
For many women, OI treatment is enough to restore regular ovulation and help them become pregnant. However, if OI doesn’t lead to success, or if there are other factors affecting fertility, such as blocked fallopian tubes or male factor infertility (fertility issues caused by sperm health or quality), your specialist may recommend moving on to other treatments like IUI or IVF.
At Bourn Hall, we’ll guide you step by step, helping you understand when it may be time to consider IVF and whether it’s the right option for you.
