Starting your fertility journey
Preparation for Treatment
Before beginning fertility treatment, many single women choose to have fertility tests. These provide a clear picture of your reproductive health and can help guide your next steps with confidence. Understanding your fertility early can offer reassurance, peace of mind and the best chance of success when you’re ready to begin treatment.
This simple blood test measures the level of AMH, a hormone produced by the small sacs in your ovaries that hold eggs. It indicates your ovarian reserve (the number of eggs you have). A higher reserve means you may have more eggs available, which may give you a greater chance of success with fertility treatment.
This scan takes a close look at the lining of your womb and your ovaries to check how many eggs you have and that your reproductive system is working as it should. The results give you a clearer picture of your fertility and help us suggest the most suitable treatment options for you.
The test measures antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme the thyroid gland uses to produce thyroid hormones. Elevated TPO antibodies may indicate that the immune system is attacking the thyroid.
The TSH test measures the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone in the blood. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and regulates how much thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) the thyroid gland produces. TSH is the primary screening test for thyroid function. It helps identify whether the thyroid is:
* Underactive (hypothyroidism)
* Overactive (hyperthyroidism)
* Functioning normally (euthyroid)

Fertility treatments
If you’re a single woman wanting to have a baby, fertility treatment can make that possible. At Bourn Hall, we offer treatments such as donor sperm insemination and in vitro fertilisation (IVF), and we will guide you through each option with care.
Our team is here to provide clear advice and ongoing support so you feel confident at every stage of your journey.
Private IVF treatment
A treatment where eggs are fertilised by sperm in a lab, then transferred to the womb, offering hope to individuals or couples facing difficulties conceiving naturally.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Sometimes conventional IVF needs a helping hand. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a lab technique that may be appropriate for you, if your sperm needs a bit of extra help to achieve successful fertilisation.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
A fertility treatment where sperm is placed directly into the womb during ovulation, helping to increase the likelihood of sperm reaching and fertilising an egg.
Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A)
A screening method used during IVF to check embryos for chromosomal abnormalities, helping to select the healthiest embryos for transfer, enhancing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
IUI with Donor Sperm
A treatment where donated sperm is carefully placed into the womb during ovulation, supporting individuals or couples unable to conceive with their own sperm.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions answered. Find clarity on every step of your fertility journey.
IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, is a treatment where eggs and sperm are brought together in a laboratory to create embryos. An embryo is then transferred into the womb to try to achieve pregnancy. IVF can help overcome a range of fertility challenges.
The first step is to book a consultation with one of our fertility doctors. They’ll review your history, explain the process and arrange any tests you need before creating a personalised treatment plan.
You can also join one of our free open events to learn more.
As embryos develop, our embryologists carefully check their growth and quality. The healthiest embryo is then selected for transfer, giving you the best chance of success.
At Bourn Hall, you can view detailed, non-identifying profiles of sperm donors to help you make a choice that feels right for you. These profiles include information such as physical characteristics, interests and background.
Our team will guide you through the process with care and answer any questions you may have along the way
Donors are not legal parents and have no financial responsibility for any children born. When a donor-conceived child turns 18, they can choose to access identifying information about their donor.
Bourn Hall has long supported single women who wish to become parents, recognising that every journey is unique. Care is shaped around your circumstances, whether you’re exploring fertility testing, IVF using your own eggs or using donor sperm.
If you’re a single woman considering IVF, your consultation will be centred on taking time to understand your hopes, questions and priorities. Your specialist will talk you through each stage of treatment in a clear and supportive way, including donor sperm options, consent and how IVF can be planned around your life and timing. Alongside medical care, you’ll have ongoing guidance and support, helping you move forward feeling informed, confident and comfortable with each decision you make.
If you’re not using a partner’s sperm, IVF treatment will usually involve donor sperm. This can be discussed in detail during your initial consultation, including how donors are selected and what information is available to you.
Fertility testing may include blood tests, ultrasound scans and other assessments to help understand your fertility and guide treatment planning. Your specialist will explain which tests are recommended for you and why.
Yes. Counselling is offered as part of care and can be particularly helpful when considering donor conception or making decisions independently. It provides a space to explore emotional and practical considerations.
Some single women choose to freeze eggs or embryos to preserve fertility for the future. This option can be discussed if you’re not ready to start treatment right away.
IVF care is personalised and focused on open communication and support. Our appointments are unhurried, with time to ask questions and explore options without pressure.
