Starting your fertility journey

Fertility testing options

Fertility testing gives you answers, provides reassurance, and gives you peace of mind. It can also help you decide if you want to start a family right now or preserve your fertility.

Sperm testing

A good (not definitive) assessment of male fertility. A semen sample is collected either at home or in a private space at the clinic. The semen is then evaluated for the number of sperm, their movement and shape; any abnormality in one of these criteria could mean that fertility potential is reduced.

Fertility treatments

As a single male you will need fertility treatment to help you realise your dreams of having a baby. You may also need donor eggs to complete your male fertility treatment. Eggs can be donated by a known or unknown donor and we will guide you through both options. If you prefer an unknown donor, we can help you find one through our innovative egg donor programme. Be reassured, we will be here to guide and support you throughout the entire process.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered. Find clarity on every step of your fertility journey.

How’s my sperm doing?

At our clinics in Cambridge, Colchester, Norwich and Wickford, we can help you to understand how your sperm is doing with semen (sperm) analysis tests.

Semen (sperm) analysis is a series of measurements made on your ejaculate, the results of which are used to make an assessment of your fertility. Along with other clinical information, the results help to determine the likelihood of natural conception or, if necessary, what type of assisted conception treatment is appropriate for you.

The main measurements made in semen analysis tests include the concentration of sperm and how many are motile (moving as they should), progressive, and normal in shape. If one or more of these measurements is below the normal range, fertility may be impaired. As part of our analysis, judgement is made on how many of these values fall below normal range and to what extent.

Semen analysis is a good indicator of your fertility, but it does have its limitations, as it does not test how the sperm will interact with eggs.

Semen samples are produced by masturbation in specially designated private rooms at one of our clinics in Cambridge, Colchester, Norwich, and Wickford, or with one of our at-home test kits. Ideally, the sample should be produced after sexual abstinence of at least two days, but no more than seven.

For more information about our facilities at Bourn Hall, and how we can help you to understand your fertility health, please get in touch.

What rights does the egg donor have to the child?

As an egg donor, you do not have any legal parental rights or responsibilities.

Under UK law, the woman who gives birth is the only legal mother of a child. While your generous donation helps others create their families, you will have no legal or financial responsibilities toward the child.

If I am required to take a Covid-19 test, how do I get a test?

Tests should be sourced yourself from the NHS online service or local pharmacy stores and your test result should be registered with the NHS using the QR code on the test.

You can order tests via the NHS website.

Is there an age limit for IVF treatment?

In the UK, you can receive NHS funding or IVF up to the age of 42 (if you meet other NHS criteria). However, as a private clinic, Bourn Hall do not impose the same restriction and we aim to support patients in their decision making process. Bourn Hall will not offer fresh IVF treatment using your own eggs if at the time of starting treatment, you are expected to be 45 years or older. If you are over this age, then please speak to us about other options such as IVF using donor eggs.

What support do you offer patients?

We know that struggling to conceive is emotionally challenging, and that many patients feel their anxiety about fertility treatment has been amplified by the COVID-19 situation. We want all our patients to be able to access much-needed support during this truly difficult and uncertain time.

Our dedicated fertility nurses and patient Support Coordinators are available to support you and provide advice during your journey. Our nurses can also refer you to our independent fertility counsellors who are offering appointments by telephone, in-person or virtually.

One of our counsellors has also written several blogs to support your physical and emotional wellbeing including advice about coping with uncertainty to help you process your emotions.

Our Fertility Support Group, held virtually, is led by an independent fertility counsellor, and other members of our Bourn Hall family. Joining the group meeting gives you the opportunity to talk to other people experiencing infertility, with members supporting each other on what can be an emotional journey.

If you would like to join a group meeting, please register your interest via our events page and our In Treatment team will be in touch with further details of how to join.
