Starting your fertility journey

Fertility testing options

When you and your partner begin thinking about starting a family together, the first step is understanding your fertility health as a couple. Fertility testing offers valuable insights and provides peace of mind. It can guide your decisions about whether to start your family now or consider options for preserving your fertility for the future.

At Bourn Hall, we offer dedicated fertility testing tailored to male same-sex couples. Our tests are simple, straightforward and designed to give you clear, reliable insights into your fertility health.

Sperm testing

Sperm testing provides a comprehensive overview of your fertility. A semen sample can be collected either at home or in a private space at our clinic. Our specialists then analyse the sample to assess the sperm count, movement and shape.

If any irregularities are detected, our team will explain your results in plain, supportive language and guide you through the next steps.

Fertility treatments

Building a family as a male same-sex couple may feel like a complex journey, but with the right fertility treatment and compassionate guidance, parenthood is entirely possible.

You’ll need donor eggs, which can come from either a known or anonymous donor. Our team will guide you through both options with care and sensitivity. If you choose an anonymous donor, we can help you find the right match through our trusted and carefully regulated egg donor programme.

The donor eggs are fertilised through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), using either your or your partner’s sperm. Once the embryos are ready, they are transferred to a surrogate, who will carry the pregnancy on your behalf.

We’ll support you every step of the way, from choosing your donor and treatment pathway to understanding the legal and emotional aspects of the process.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered. Find clarity on every step of your fertility journey.

Whose sperm should we use?

That’s entirely your choice. Some couples decide that one partner will provide sperm, while others choose to fertilise donor eggs with sperm from both partners, allowing shared involvement in the process. We’ll explain each option clearly, helping you decide what feels right for your family.

Can we both be legal parents?

Yes, you can. The legal process depends on your individual circumstances and whether you’re married or in a civil partnership. Our team will explain the steps you’ll need to take to ensure both partners are recognised as legal parents.

How successful is surrogacy?

Success rates vary depending on factors such as the age and health of your egg donor and surrogate. At Bourn Hall, we provide clear, personalised information about your individual chances and guide you through treatment options that meet your needs.

Can we freeze sperm for future treatment?

Absolutely. Sperm freezing allows you to preserve fertility for later use, whether for family planning or before medical treatment. It’s a straightforward and reliable process that can give you flexibility and peace of mind for the future.
