Is egg freezing right for me?

Egg freezing can be a good option for some individuals based on their personal circumstances, health, and future plans. Here's a breakdown to help you decide if it's for you:

  • Age & fertility - If you're concerned about declining egg quality and quantity with age, freezing your eggs in your late 20s to early 30s can help preserve their current health.
  • Lifestyle & timing - If you're not ready for a family due to career, finances, or personal circumstances, freezing your eggs offers more flexibility.
  • Medical reasons - If you have a medical condition or need treatments like chemotherapy that could affect fertility, egg freezing can safeguard your future options. (Please note, there is a separate pathway for this that would require you to work with your local hospital for referral).

What to consider:

  • Can you afford the costs of egg freezing and storage?
  • Are you emotionally prepared for hormone treatments and the retrieval process?
  • Have you consulted a fertility specialist about your egg health and success rates?

It could be a suitable option for you, but the decision is personal and often benefits from consultation with a medical professional who can provide tailored advice based on your situation.

How does it work?

Egg freezing can offer you a way to preserve your eggs if you are not ready to become pregnant just now but wish to bank some of your eggs to preserve your future fertility.

A cycle of egg freezing involves the same treatment as for conventional IVF, except the eggs are not fertilised or transferred. The eggs that are mature enough for this process are frozen on the same day as your egg collection.

Any eggs collected from you that are suitable for freezing, will be stored at your chosen clinic for up to 55 years – the maximum standard storage period allowed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). We’ll contact you every year and ask you to confirm your wishes for the next 12 months. If you wish to continue storage with us, there is an annual storage fee to pay.

When the time comes for you to use your stored eggs, they will be thawed and inseminated with sperm. We’ll then transfer the resulting embryos to you, using the same procedure as in a conventional IVF embryo transfer.

Our pathway for egg preservation

Fertility check and consultation

The initial fertility check is a crucial step in your egg freezing journey, designed to provide personalised support and a deeper understanding of your individual fertility needs. Using a pelvic ultrasound scan alongside an anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) blood test, we aim to offer you a comprehensive insight into your ovarian reserve and overall fertility health.

During your consultation, our caring and experienced team, led by a highly regarded fertility consultant, will thoroughly review your medical history and the results of your fertility assessments. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities. We will take the time to discuss all available treatment options in detail, ensuring you feel empowered and fully informed about whether egg freezing is the right path for you.

Your journey matters to us, and we are committed to supporting you with compassion and expertise every step of the way.

Treatment plan

Following your consultation you will receive a detailed treatment plan, providing you with the options to take forward based on your own test results and personal plans discussed in the consultation.

Nurse consultation

You will meet with your dedicated treatment coordinator, who will work alongside you to finalise your personalised treatment plan. They will ensure that all the necessary preparations are in place, allowing you to begin your journey with confidence and peace of mind. Throughout the process, your treatment coordinator will be on hand to offer guidance and support, helping to make your egg freezing experience as seamless and reassuring as possible.

Egg collection

During this process, we will carry out regular ultrasound scans to closely monitor follicle development, ensuring we can determine the optimal time for egg collection. For most patients, treatment typically begins on the first day of your period and lasts approximately 14 days.

The egg collection itself is a straightforward procedure, taking around 30 minutes and performed under light sedation. Using ultrasound guidance, a highly skilled doctor will carefully retrieve eggs from the follicles in your ovaries.

Following collection, our experienced embryologists will freeze your eggs using a highly advanced technique called vitrification. The frozen eggs will then be stored securely in liquid nitrogen, safely preserved until you decide the time is right to use them.

We are here to support you every step of the way, ensuring you feel comfortable, reassured, and fully informed throughout the entire process.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered. Find clarity on every step of your fertility journey.

How many cycles of egg freezing will I need?

The number of egg freezing cycles required will depend on your individual fertility levels. Generally, younger women tend to have a higher ovarian reserve and a greater proportion of genetically healthy eggs. As a result, more viable eggs are typically collected per cycle, reducing the number of cycles needed.

For most women, the desired number of eggs can be achieved in 1–3 treatment cycles. During your consultation, your doctor will provide personalised advice on the expected number of eggs you might freeze, based on your unique circumstances.

Can I have multiple egg freezing cycles?

You may wish to have multiple cycles in order to freeze your desired quantity of eggs. The exact timing of the subsequent cycle(s) will be discussed with your consultant based on the outcome of the first cycle.

Can I freeze my eggs if I am using hormonal birth control?

If you are using hormonal contraception, such as the oral contraceptive pill, Mirena coil, or implant, these will need to be stopped or removed prior to starting treatment but not before your initial consultation and tests.

Non-hormonal contraception, such as the copper coil, can remain in place throughout your treatment.

If you have any concerns, these can be addressed during your initial consultation, where we’ll ensure all your questions are answered.

Will freezing my eggs affect my fertility?

Your fertility will not be affected by the egg freezing process. In a natural cycle, your ovaries have multiple eggs developing, but typically only one reaches full maturity. The hormone treatment used during egg freezing allows the other developing eggs from that cycle to mature and be collected.

This process does not impact the number of eggs available for recruitment in your future natural cycles, meaning your overall fertility remains unaffected.

How long can I store my eggs?

In the United Kingdom, the law permits a maximum storage period of 55 years for both frozen eggs and embryos.

You will be required to provide consent for the continued storage of your eggs every 10 years if you wish to keep them preserved. It is therefore essential to ensure that the clinic always has your most up-to-date contact details.

What are the risks of egg freezing?

As with any medical intervention, there is a small risk of potential complications. The primary risk is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which affects approximately 1 in 100 women undergoing fertility treatment. It is, however, uncommon in those undergoing egg freezing cycles alone.

Symptoms of OHSS can include abdominal pain, bloating, and occasionally nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea. These symptoms typically resolve with the start of your next period.

Your safety is our top priority, and we closely monitor all treatments to minimise the risk of OHSS. This is achieved through regular ultrasound scans and blood tests. Treatment is carefully tailored to each individual, and adjustments may include modifying the dosing regimen of stimulation drugs, using an alternative trigger injection, or introducing additional medications after egg collection.

Will I find the egg freezing process painful?

Some patients may experience mild discomfort when administering the medication. However, the needles used are extremely fine, and the hormones are injected into the fatty tissue around your abdomen. Side effects from the hormones can occur and are similar to symptoms experienced during a period, such as bloating and mild cramping.

The ultrasound scans are conducted using a vaginal probe, as this provides the clearest images. While this may cause slight discomfort, the procedure is quick and minimally invasive.

The egg retrieval procedure is typically performed under sedation, ensuring you do not feel any discomfort during the process. After waking, you may feel slightly sore and experience some abdominal cramping, but this usually resolves quickly.
