Semen analysis
If you’re considering expanding or starting your family, a semen analysis test may be an important step in your journey. At Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic, we offer a thorough semen analysis that helps ensure your fertility treatments are tailored to your unique needs.
Our comprehensive semen analysis test provides valuable insights into your sperm health, motility and any potential underlying fertility issues. We’ll take the time to carefully explain your results so you can take the steps towards growing your family with confidence.
Page Guide
We understand that fertility treatment can be a complex and emotional journey. Our team is dedicated to providing you with all the information and support you need throughout the process.
How does it work?
Semen analysis: how does it work?
A semen analysis is a simple yet effective way to assess male fertility. When you book your appointment, we’ll provide you with detailed preparation instructions and confirm a convenient date for your visit.
To ensure the most accurate results, it’s important that you refrain from ejaculation for up to seven days before your appointment. This helps achieve the highest possible sperm count, allowing us to give you the most precise insights.
On the day of your appointment, you’ll be welcomed by our friendly team at the clinic, who will provide you with all the information you need.
You’ll be escorted to a private room where you’ll provide a sample (via masturbation) into a sterile container. If you’re not comfortable doing this at our clinic, you also have the option to collect your sample at home. Rest assured, our clinic guarantees complete discretion and privacy for every patient who walks through our doors.
Once we receive your sample, we will carefully analyse it in our laboratory. We assess key factors such as sperm count, motility (movement) and morphology (shape). Any abnormalities in these areas could indicate a potential impact on fertility.
Don’t delay – get tested!
Quite often, it’s only when conception doesn’t happen quite as quickly as we’d hoped that the health of sperm comes into question. So, if you suspect there might be an issue with your sperm, getting a fertility test is a sensible and logical first step.
Fertility testing doesn’t have to be daunting. With our support, you can gain a broader understanding of your fertility, bringing you one step closer to your goal of becoming a parent. It can also provide peace of mind and, with all the information at your fingertips, allow you to make informed decisions.
Semen analysis test results
We’ll provide your results as quickly as possible, so you can spend less time worrying and more time taking the right steps toward achieving your fertility and long-term goals.
Your results will include key information about:
- Semen volume – the amount of semen produced in your sample, measured in millilitres (ml).
- Sperm concentration – the number of sperm in each millilitre of your sample. On average, there are between 15 million and 200 million sperm per millilitre of semen.
- Total sperm count – the total number of sperm in your entire sample.
- Progressive motility – indicates how many of your sperm are swimming progressively (forward).
- Normal forms – evaluates the percentage of your sperm with normal shapes and notes any abnormalities.
Your results help us determine which fertility treatments are best suited for your needs. We’ll take the time to ensure you fully understand them, so you feel informed at every step of your fertility journey.
If you have a low sperm count or sperm that struggles to create high-quality embryos, ICSI may be a suitable option. Instead of allowing the sperm to meet the egg in the culture dish, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg, improving the chances of fertilisation.
