The inaugural edition of the Nurses’ Fertility Masterclass was recently held across two days from 24th-25th July 2025 at Bourn Hall in Cambridge, the world’s first IVF clinic.

The two-day study event was crafted especially for Fertility Nurses and Midwives around the country with less than two years’ experience to gain first-hand knowledge from the leading experts in the field.

Bourn Hall currently hosts an annual event for doctors wishing to add to their knowledge of the field, and this year added an edition just for nurses and midwives, who also play a critical role in fertility care.

Session topics led by Bourn Hall’s team of experts included learning about the basics of fertility physiology, HyCoSy and ultrasound scanning in fertility care. Robust group work sessions based on case studies also ensured that the attendees were given real-world scenarios to analyse.

To supplement the presentations and group work, the course also featured immersive practical sessions using simulation machines so that attendees could benefit from hands-on experience with equipment. These simulation machines proved particularly valuable to the attendees, as they offered a fundamental yet critical understanding of key IVF techniques in practice.

In addition to the expert-led sessions, group study and simulation sessions, both study days were also inclusive of meals, refreshments and accommodation. A team dinner for delegates and presenters at the close of the first day was also enjoyed by participants.

On the second day, it was back to more thought-provoking discussions including a presentation on Practical steps in Oocyte Retrieval & Embryo Transfer, as well as a discussion on Ethical and Legal Considerations of IVF, both delivered by Bourn Hall’s very own Medical Director and Chief Executive Director Dr. Thanos Papathanasiou.

The Masterclass ended with delegates receiving official certificates of completion and providing feedback via surveys provided. We are happy to share that the feedback received has been overwhelmingly positive thus far. Some comments are as follows:

“The 2 days were so well organised and everyone was so well looked after.”

“It was a great agenda and the feedback from everyone in the sessions was so positive.”

“Really enjoyed the content, presenters and simulation sessions.”

Here at Bourn Hall, we are passionate about sharing our insights and experience with those interested in fertility care. As the world’s first IVF clinic, founded by the pioneers in the field, we feel a duty to help as many people as possible achieve their long-hoped dream of having a family of their own. Providing the ability to nurses early on in their careers to learn from our fertility experts in the field plays an important step in achieving this aim.
