Why should I consider fertility testing?

Our fertility testing offers you clear, in-depth insight into your reproductive health, helping drive your fertility treatment decisions.

Fertility testing might be right for you if you're:

    • Considering starting a family
    • Having trouble conceiving naturally
    • Experiencing recurrent miscarriages
    • In a same-sex couple exploring your options
    • Concerned about your reproductive health and seeking peace of mind

No matter your reason, our fertility testing can provide the answers you need to make informed decisions about your reproductive health.

If you're unsure if fertility testing is the right step for you, contact our friendly team. We are here to listen and discuss your needs to help you feel confident in your decision.

What's included in our fertility tests?

Our fertility tests are designed to give you a thorough understanding of your reproductive health. Depending on your needs, they may include:

    • Blood tests - these check the levels of key hormones such as Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). AMH indicates your ovarian reserve - the number of eggs you have in your ovaries. TSH stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles (fluid-filled sacs that contain eggs). Low levels may suggest problems with ovulation.
    • Ultrasound scans - pelvic scans can check your womb and ovaries for any issues or abnormalities that may be affecting your fertility.
    • Semen analysis - this test examines sperm under a microscope to evaluate the total count, motility (movement) and shape to help identify any factors that could be influencing your fertility.

We take a holistic approach to fertility health, which means looking at the whole picture - not just test results. As part of your fertility testing, you will also receive a consultation with a nutritionist. We'll help you incorporate the right nutrients into your diet to support your fertility from the get-go.

Frequently asked questions about fertility testing

How do I prepare for a fertility test?

We'll let you know exactly how to prepare for your fertility tests. For women, we may ask you to schedule your appointment at a specific time during your menstrual cycle. This helps us get the most accurate results. For men, we recommend refraining from ejaculation for a certain period before providing a semen sample, so that the sample is a true reflection of your reproductive health.

    How accurate are fertility tests?

Generally, fertility tests provide accurate results, though several factors can influence them. For instance, having a hormonal blood test at the wrong point in your menstrual cycle may affect results.

At Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic, we take every precaution to ensure the accuracy of your fertility test results. Our experienced team is dedicated to performing and interpreting fertility tests with the utmost care and precision.

What are some signs that I have problems with ovulation?

If you're not ovulating each month, you may experience:

    • Irregular or missed periods
    • A lack of usual premenstrual symptoms (like breast tenderness)
    • Spotting between periods
    • Periods that are unusually heavy or very light
    • Difficulty conceiving naturally

That said, some women may not realise they have ovulation issues until they undergo fertility testing.

What are the signs of a low sperm count?

Most men will not know they have a low sperm count until they have a semen analysis - often after experiencing difficulty conceiving naturally.

However, some men may experience a low libido (sex drive) and difficulty maintaining an erection. This is usually the case when the low sperm count is caused by an underlying health condition like low testosterone.

What factors can affect my fertility?

Many health and lifestyle factors can negatively affect your fertility. These include:

    • Having a condition that affects your reproductive system, like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis
    • Being overweight or underweight
    • Genetic health conditions that affect your reproductive system (genetic testing is available to help identify these)
    • Untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
