Sperm donation
Donating your sperm is a selfless and generous act that can turn somebody’s dream of becoming a parent into a reality. Choose to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life and do something truly remarkable by becoming a sperm donor with us at Bourn Hall.
Help someone create a family by donating your sperm.
Why become a sperm donor?
There are many reasons why people decide to become sperm donors, but one thing all our donors share is a deep desire to help others achieve their dream of having a family.
Becoming a sperm donor is an extraordinary act of kindness that can change somebody’s life forever. Your decision to donate your sperm could not only help bring a new life into the world but also give someone an opportunity to become a parent.
Unfortunately, there’s currently a shortage of sperm donors across the country, leaving many hopeful parents facing an anxious wait for fertility treatment. You could be the person to give them that chance.
Who can donate their sperm?
If you’d like to become a sperm donor with us at Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic, we’ll begin by carefully assessing your eligibility to ensure your sperm is suitable for use as part of a fertility treatment.
To start the process, you’ll need to be:
- At least 18 years old
- A non-smoker
- In good health, with no family history of hereditary illnesses or diseases
If you meet these criteria, we’ll then ask you to provide a sperm sample. This will allow us to assess your fertility and ensure there’s no risk of passing any serious diseases or conditions to the recipient mother or baby.
If you’d like to become a sperm donor, there are several steps in the process. Here’s what you can expect:
Step 1 – Schedule an appointment
Reach out to us to schedule an appointment with one of our fertility specialists. During your consultation, we’ll talk you through the sperm donation process in detail and answer any questions you might have.
Step 2 – Give your consent
If you decide to go ahead with donating your sperm, we’ll ask for your written consent. Rest assured, you have the option to withdraw your contest at any point before your sperm is used to create an embryo in somebody else’s fertility treatment.
Step 3 – Initial fertility screening and health tests
Our team will conduct a series of medical assessments, including blood tests and a detailed semen analysis, to ensure you meet our required criteria. At this stage, we may also perform genetic screening and offer counselling to support you throughout the process.
Step 4 – Sperm collection
Once we’ve analysed your sperm and determined that you’re a suitable candidate, we’ll ask you to provide sperm samples at our clinic over an agreed period – usually once a week for three to six months.
During each visit, we’ll ask you to ejaculate into a cup. We’ll then freeze the samples you provide for future use in fertility treatments, research or training purposes.
Step 5 – Sperm storage and screening
Your sperm donations will be frozen and stored in a secure facility before being quarantined for several months. During this time, we’ll need to perform some additional blood tests to make sure you’re free of any underlying infectious or genetic diseases.
Step 6 – Ongoing support and follow-up care
Once your sperm donations are complete, we’ll continue to provide support and counselling as and when you need it. We can also keep you informed about the status of your donations, letting you know as soon as they’re used in treatment.
Becoming a sperm donor is one of the most generous gifts you can give. In appreciation of your time and commitment, you will receive compensation of up to £45 per visit to our clinic, up to a maximum of £750.
We understand that choosing to donate your sperm isn’t an easy decision to make. That’s why our team are always on hand to address any concerns you might have and ensure you’re fully informed about every step of the process.

Every fertility clinic has different eligibility criteria. Here at Bourn Hall, we welcome sperm donors who are:
- Aged at least 18 years old
- Non-smokers
- In good health, with no family history of hereditary illnesses or diseases
If you meet these criteria, you may be able to donate your sperm. However, we will need to conduct a thorough screening to make sure there’s no risk of passing on any infectious or genetic diseases to the recipient mother or baby.
Once you’re approved as a viable sperm donor, we’ll invite you to visit our clinic to donate your sperm samples. This will involve ejaculating into a cup in a private, comfortable and relaxing space that will be provided for you by our friendly team.
Compensation for sperm donation ranges from clinic to clinic and is regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). At Bourn Hall, we offer compensation of up to £35 per visit to our clinic, up to a maximum of £750.
Yes, you can. Since COVID-19 vaccines don’t contain any live virus, there’s no risk of passing COVID-19 on through sperm donation.
However, the HFEA guidelines do state that you must allow at least seven days from your most recent vaccination before donating sperm.
Yes, absolutely! How you choose to donate your sperm is completely up to you. Just let us know during your first consultation how you’d like it to be used, and we’ll make sure that it’s only ever used in a way you’re comfortable with.
No, there isn’t! Due to the current national shortage of sperm donors, you won’t need to wait long if you’re keen to donate.
At Bourn Hall, we offer several initiatives to encourage sperm donations. One of those is our sperm-sharing programme, which allows people who are already undergoing fertility treatment to donate their sperm in exchange for a discounted rate.
Sperm sharing helps make our fertility treatments more affordable while also providing those in need of donor sperm with improved access opportunities.
Choosing a local sperm bank can make it easier to attend face-to-face appointments, reduce travel time, and fit treatment around everyday life. For many people, knowing support is close by brings added reassurance as they take their next steps.
At Bourn Hall, our sperm bank services are available across our network of clinics, allowing you to access care in a setting that feels familiar and manageable.
