Female fertility testing: how does it work?

Female fertility testing looks at different aspects of your reproductive health to give you a clear picture of your fertility.

At Bourn Hall, we combine blood tests and ultrasound scans to assess your ovarian reserve, hormone levels and the overall health of your reproductive system, providing insights that can help you make informed decisions about your family-building journey.

Understanding your ovarian reserve

Every woman is born with a set number of eggs stored in her ovaries. Over time, both the number and quality of these eggs naturally decline, which is why age plays an important role in fertility.

By measuring your ovarian reserve – sometimes called an egg count – we can provide valuable insight into your chances of natural conception and how your ovaries might respond to fertility treatments.

There are two ways we assess your ovarian reserve:

  • Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) blood test – this measures levels of AMH, which reflect how many eggs remain in your ovaries. It helps us estimate how your ovaries may respond to fertility medication and the potential number of eggs we could collect during treatment
  • Ultrasound scan – this examines the number of small fluid-filled sacs, called follicles, in your ovaries. Each follicle contains an immature egg, and counting these gives us an estimate of your egg reserve. The scan also allows us to check your uterus and surrounding reproductive organs for any factors that could affect conception

What your results mean

Your female fertility test results can provide reassurance about your ability to conceive naturally or highlight areas where additional support could help. For some, simple lifestyle adjustments, like improving nutrition or managing weight, may make a meaningful difference. In other cases, further tests or treatments may be recommended.

Whatever your results show, our specialists will explain them clearly and guide you with care and compassion through any next steps.

At-home female fertility testing

For added convenience, we offer the option to complete certain tests, such as AMH and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), from the comfort of your own home.* If you choose this route, we’ll send you a test kit with clear instructions and arrange secure delivery of your samples to the laboratory for analysis.

Our fertility doctors will carefully review your results and provide you with a personalised report, explaining what the findings mean and guiding you on any next steps.

*We use Mojo and The Doctors Laboratory to fulfil our at-home tests. By choosing this option, you authorise us to share your contact details with them so your results can be processed securely and efficiently.

Is female fertility testing right for me?

Female fertility testing is often recommended if you’ve been trying to conceive for a year without success (or for six months if you’re over 35). It can also be helpful if you’re planning to have children later in life and want to understand your ovarian reserve, or if you’ve experienced irregular periods or other symptoms that may affect fertility.

Testing can also provide clarity for single women considering their future family plans, as well as female same-sex couples exploring their options. Whatever your circumstances, a fertility test can offer a clearer picture of your reproductive health and guide you with confidence towards the right next steps.
